Nation of Makers Core Principles

As a Nation of Makers, we believe we are stronger and more sustainable when…

Everyone is welcome, including people of every age, ability, race, religion, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, veteran status, marital status, parental status, level of education, and socioeconomic class.

Everyone within our movement, our community, and in our spaces is safe, supported, heard, encouraged, and respected.

Everyone has access to the education and resources needed to make.

Every maker respects the safety and wellbeing of the community.

Our community chooses to engage in the ongoing process of making a more inclusive culture.

If your maker organization intends to be part of that ongoing process, consider taking the pledge below to uphold these Core Principles in your space and community.

Participating organizations can download a digital copy of the Core Principles poster pictured above, designed by Nacho Montiel. A limited quantity of printed 18” x 24” posters will also be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Nation of Makers Core Principles were drafted as an effort of the NOM Culture & Inclusion Working Group in collaboration with the Liberatory Makerspaces Team . The statements were first presented for peer feedback during NOMCON 2018 and have been through many stages of editing and careful revision to reach the final draft.
