With the greater availability of low-cost tools and digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing, desktop milling machines and microcontrollers, Americans now have greater capacity to prototype and develop solutions and products. Across the U.S., there are more than 2,000 makerspaces and Fab Labs in communities, schools, libraries and museums where people, of all ages and backgrounds, with broad and diverse skill sets, are coming together to access tools, technologies, and equipment. Therefore, investment in makerspaces and programs is critical for U.S. global competitiveness and domestic priorities. This includes economic development and innovation, workforce development and education, and environmental sustainability.

    Culture and Inclusion Working Group

The Nation of Makers Culture & Inclusion Working Group is working to answer the simple question, “How do we make the Nation of Makers and maker culture more diverse and inclusive?” Moving beyond just a seat at the table, the work of our C&I Working Group is developing tools and resources to allow people of all backgrounds the opportunity to fully participate and shape their maker experience in organizations around the world - as leaders and full participants. We know that this work must be intentional, and is informed by a body of research and personal experience. On this page, find a working compilation of culture and inclusion resources to help your organization realize the potential of full inclusion.

  • Data Working Group

A makerspace or hackerspace can be a complicated beast to run. They are places for the community to gather, where you can learn, tinker and socialize. You can hone your hobbies or develop your small business. Different makerspaces are set up for folks of different age groups.

The mission of the Data Working Group is to support these spaces, and to provide the maker community data as a regular stream of information that will help spread the word about the impact and importance of these facilities. Makethedata.org is run by the data working subcommittee of the Nation of Makers. We conduct the annual Survey of Makerspaces, and other survey/research initiatives focused on making.

    Libraries Working Group

Library makerspaces provide resources and tools for tinkering, creative exploration, education and research. They may be located at a university, a school or a public library and can serve to support curricular needs, workforce and entrepreneurial development, or provide a place for informal learning, community projects or recreation.

The Libraries Working Group supports a network of library professionals who develop and deliver maker programs and support makerspaces in school, academic and public libraries. The group shares resources, holds virtual meetings, provides opportunities for collaboration and idea exchange, and conducts research on the state of library makerspaces.
