Culture and Inclusion Resources

The Nation of Makers Culture & Inclusion Working Group is working to answer the simple question, “How do we make the Nation of Makers and maker culture more diverse and inclusive?”

Moving beyond just a seat at the table, the work of our C&I Working Group is developing tools and resources to allow people of all backgrounds the opportunity to fully participate and shape their maker experience in organizations around the world - as leaders and full participants.

We know that this work must be intentional, and is informed by a body of research and personal experience. On this page, find a working compilation of culture and inclusion resources to help your organization realize the potential of full inclusion.

How do I start the conversation about Inclusion?

We know that conversations about culture and inclusion can be difficult. Often, individuals in a space or organization may not realize the perspectives of others within their community. As an icebreaker activity, we recommend our Maker Perspectives Poll. It’s a great way to gauge the many perspectives of those within your community in a friendly and eye-opening manner. We initially administered this poll to our wider Nation of Makers’ community of leaders at NOMCON 2018, and are making it freely available for spaces and organizations to use to start the important dialogue about inclusion.

Please Note: This work is not easy and will not be accomplished in one “magic step”. Each organization may choose to embrace one small inclusive step or multiple changes on the road to inclusion. No matter whether you’re starting on this journey, or have been doing this work for a long time, we are grateful you’re on this page today, and hope that these resources will enable you to reach your organization’s full maker potential. And should you have a resource to share with our community, please use the form below to let us know!
